The Function of Power Steering Gear

During the steering process, the steering rack can effectively reduce the operating force on the steering wheel and control the steering wheel's return speed. When the vehicle completes the steering action, the steering gear can provide appropriate steering force, making the steering process more sensitive and easier to operate, thereby reducing the operating force required for the steering wheel. This design not only reduces the driver's labor intensity, but also provides stable steering capabilities for high-speed vehicles. In addition, when the steering device fails, the steering gear can ensure the normal operation of the mechanical steering system, absorb the impact force from the road to the front wheels, and reduce the vibration effect on the steering wheel.

The power steering system usually consists of a steering oil tank, a steering pump, a steering column and a steering gear. The power steering gear with a rotary valve structure is usually used in conjunction with a continuously operating steering oil pump. The oil pump draws hydraulic oil from the oil tank and delivers it to the control valve of the power steering gear. When the steering gear is stationary, the control valve remains in the neutral position, and the hydraulic oil returns directly to the oil tank through the control valve.

Middle position:

When the car is driving straight and the steering wheel is not operated, the oil pump supplies hydraulic oil to the system through the oil port. At this time, the hydraulic oil flows into the two working chambers after passing through the gap between the valve core and the valve body. Since the rotary valve is in a stationary state at this time, the oil pressure in the two working chambers is equal, so no power is generated, and the hydraulic oil then flows back to the tank.

Steering process:

When the driver turns the steering wheel, the gap between the valve core and the valve body inside the rotary valve changes, resulting in a difference in oil pressure in the two working chambers. This oil pressure difference is proportional to the steering resistance and acts on the rack piston, driving the rack piston to overcome the steering resistance and produce displacement, thereby turning the front wheels of the car.

Return process:

After the steering is completed, the force applied to the steering wheel disappears. Under the action of the internal torsion bar and the front wheel return torque, the oil pressure difference in the two working chambers gradually disappears, and the steering wheel naturally returns to the straight position.

Steering feel:

Steering feel is the ability to feel the steering wheel turning. When the driver applies force to the steering wheel, this force also acts on the steering gear at the same time, causing the steering gear to turn and twist the internal torsion bar. The deformation of the torsion bar is directly related to the steering resistance. The greater the resistance, the greater the deformation. Therefore, the driver can judge the magnitude of the steering resistance by the amount of force applied to the steering wheel, thereby obtaining the "steering feel" effect.

The Structure Principle of Power Steering Gear

The power steering gear adopts a rack and pinion design, with an adjustment semicircle device on the back of the pinion. Through the pressure applied by the spring, this adjustment semicircle is pressed against the rack, ensuring that the rack and the pinion are in close contact with appropriate pressure. The clearance in the steering mechanism is adjusted by the adjustment semicircle and the spring to ensure the stability and accuracy of the system.
